OCEAN CITY, Md. –  Drivers in Ocean City need to pay attention to lowered speed limits this week, or you could end up paying a hefty fine. A Special Event Zone is now in effect in the resort town ahead of the Annual Cruisin’ Ocean City car show.

In April 2018, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan signed the “Special Event Zone” bill into law allowing authorities in Worcester County to designate Special Event Zones during large events, particularly motor events.

The legislation allows officials to lower speed limits in the Special Event Zone. Similar to a Construction Zone, violators will face increased fines if speeding in a Special Event Zone.

Coastal Highway and Philadelphia Avenue have been designated as a Special Event Zone, with the speed limit lowered to 30 miles per hour.

Thousands of classic cars, hot rods, and tricked out trucks are expected in town for the event.

Neighbors like David Saylor are happy to see a Special Event Zone in place after watching reckless driving at past car events in Ocean City.

“You have crowds of people standing alongside the road. Hundreds of people at a time. What if one of those cars gets out of control accidentally cause the guy’s trying to show off and runs over people,” said Saylor.

Demetrius Shockley of Berlin hopes the Special Event Zone helps with public safety.

“You want to keep everyone safe. You want to keep children safe. You want to keep people safe,” said Shockley.

However, Shockley understands why the Special Event Zone may be frustrating for people who call Ocean City home.

“It may cause a delay for people to get to work or get to their jobs. Being stopped, you know, by the police by the speed clocks and speed odometers can cause a major issue for locals. You don’t want to pay for someone else’s negligence or negativity,” said Shockley.

People should expect to see a large police presence. Officers from allied agencies will be assisting the Ocean City Police Department (OCPD), including the Maryland State Police, Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland Transportation Authority, and Maryland Natural Resources Police.

Special Event Zones are in place during motor events in Ocean City. Signage on roadways will indicate where those Zones are in effect. Citizens are urged to drive with caution in Special Event Zones and be cognizant of speed.

The Special Event Zone is in place from May 14-19, 2019.
