Agnes the bison was 19 years old.
SALISBURY, Md.- A 19-year-old American bison at the Salisbury Zoo was humanely euthanized Thursday.
The bison, known to her keepers as Agnes, was born at the zoo on Aug. 15. 2000.
Within the last few months, zookeepers began to notice apparent changes in Agnes’ behavior. Zookeepers and veterinarians attempted to address the symptoms with medication, but within the last month, her health declined rapidly.
Staff assessed her quality of life, and the decision was made to humanely euthanize her, according to a release from the Salisbury Zoo.
A post mortem exam is scheduled through the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
The average life expectancy of the North American bison is between 15 and 20 years.
