REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – Rehoboth Beach Police are searching for a Newark man who is wanted after allegedly fleeing the scene of a vehicle crash on Saturday.

Just after 3 p.m., officers responded to the first block of Maryland Avenue for a report of a vehicle collision involving a moped and Volkswagen Passat. Police made contact with a nine-year-old child who was a passenger on the moped and had sustained a minor injury to his right foot as a result of the crash.

Further investigation revealed that 29-year-old Akeem Harris was driving the moped eastbound on Maryland Avenue with the juvenile, who was sitting on the back and not wearing a helmet. The Volkswagen Passat was also traveling in the same direction and began to turn into a parking space on the westbound side of the roadway when Harris tried to pass them, striking the drivers side of the Volkswagen. Both vehicles sustained significant damage.

Harris fled the scene on foot following the crash. Warrants have been obtained for his arrest on charges of second degree reckless endangering, leaving the scene of a collision, failure to report a collision, unsafe passing on the left, driving while suspended, and permitting a passenger under 16 to ride upon a moped without a helmet.

Anyone with information on Harris’ whereabouts should contact Cpl. Mark Sweet at 302-227-3333 or online.
