Bethany Beach – The boat ramp at Sassafras Landing will be closed Monday – Thursday for a three week period beginning this week. DNREC stated the closure is needed to provide construction access for a future shoreline stabilization project. When completed, the shoreline project will protect a pond that is adjacent to the ramp area. A series of 50 – 100 foot long row of rocks will be placed in the water parallel to the shoreline.
The ramp closure is a safety precaution. “We just don’t want to put the public in harms way by allowing them to use the ramp while we are hauling stone and running big pieces of equipment back and forth,” Delaware Regional Fish and Wildlife Manager Rob Gano told WRDE.
Once it was determined there was a need to work on the shoreline, DNREC partnered with the Center for Inland Bays near the end of 2018. The Center assisted with the project design and securing the permits required for construction.
Gano expects the ramp to fully re-open the first week of July. The ramp is open Friday‘s – Sunday‘s with limited parking.
