Rehoboth Beach, Del.- Rehoboth Beach Police have obtained arrest warrants for and are attempting to locate a man from Newark, Delaware, after he fled the scene of a vehicle collision Saturday.
Just after 3 p.m., officers responded to the first block of Maryland Avenue for a crash involving a blue moped and a green Volkswagen Passat.
Once on scene, police made contact with a nine-year-old boy who they determined was a passenger on the moped.
According to police, the boy suffered a minor injury to his right foot during the collision. He was treated by emergency medical personnel on scene.
Through their investigation, police determined 29-year-old Akeem L. Harris was allegedly driving the moped eastbound on Maryland Avenue with the boy, who was not wearing a helmet, on the back. At the same time, the Passat, driven by a 36-year-old from Front Royal, Virginia, was also heading eastbound on the road in front of the moped.
The driver of the Passat, seeing that there was no westbound traffic began to turn into a parking space located along the westbound side of the roadway. Harris attempted to pass the car on the left, driving eastbound in the westbound lane, resulting in a collision during which the front of the moped struck the driver side of the Passat. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, police said.
No other parties involved were injured, according to police.
Following the collision, Harris reportedly fled the scene on foot, police said.
Warrants have been obtained for the arrest of Harris for charges that include second-degree reckless endangering, leaving the scene of a collision, failure to report a collision, unsafe passing on the left, driving while suspended, and permitting a passenger under 16 to ride upon a moped without a helmet.
