CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. – Chopper 16 was above the Assateague Channel starting at about 9 a.m. Wednesday, ready to capture the 94th Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim.
Before the swam began, Chopper 16 was able to see exactly where the ponies were waiting on Assateague Island.
The Saltwater Cowboys rounded up about 110 ponies that live on Assateague. They then waited for slack tide, when there would be no current. Then their journey across the channel to Chincoteague Island began just before 10 a.m.
The first foal ashore was crowned Queen Neptune. About 60 foals will be auctioned off Thursday morning to both help cut the size of the herd and to raise money to help the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company pay for the ponies’ veterinary services.
